stockholm bygger

Next to a scale model of Stockholm, let's listen in as citizens ponder a changing city.

frosty walk

Walking in cold snow - the characteristic sound of winter.

two laser swords !

A toy store is a magic wonderland. Share the excitement (and a bit of parental skepticism) as the hunt goes on for the ultimate toy. Did I hear "two laser swords"?

live from T-Centralen

Ever wondered what a guided tour at the Subway Central (T-Centralen) would sound like? Well, neither had I. But here they are, all the familiar subway sounds from the perspective of a moving elevator. Do step inside for a minute!

voice of the night train

Regrettably, departure of the SJ night train #94 for Boden, Luleå and Narvik has been delayed.

This piece of bad news is delivered by a pleasant voice at Centralen.

elevator in pain

This is a painful mechanical mishap.

Something's very wrong with this elevator door which tries again and again to close and then changes its mind to open once more. It all takes place at T-centralen subway station and becomes almost surreal when a voice in the background warns "mind the doors closing" (referring to a train of course) while this door or ours clearly can't quite make it.

talking christmas tree at centralen

There's a talking and playing "Christmas tree" at Stockholm Central Station. We've shown what it looks like so now it's about time to listen as well.

the pharmacists

Ever since 1970, Apoteket is a state-run pharmaceuticals retail monopoly. Qualified pharmacists offer good advice as well as dispensing the medication. These are real pro's! In my opinion, Apoteket is an example of a well functioning monopoly.

arrival from saltsjöbaden

Slussen is a noisy hub where commuters hop on or off buses, subway trains or the Saltsjöbanan railway. Let's enjoy the sound of an arriving train from Saltsjöbaden.

the sound of kebab

No, we're not at the dentist. This is the sound of Döner Kebab meat being professionally sliced while rotated.

asparagus at hötorget

"...söta fina jordgubbar... varsågod chefen..."

Now let's stop by the fruit and vegetables market at Hötorget ("the Haymarket"). Ready to become bombarded by business offers? OK, here we go, just listen.

bus trip to jarlaplan

It's about time we try riding a bus. At the moment of writing the Stockholm city buses are in fact grounded (is that the term?) due to a strike but never mind. Here now a clip from a recent trip to Jarlaplan. Do you recognize the noise?

A final glimpse from that hockey training might seem odd in early June. On the other hand, the World Championships ended a couple of weeks ago.

sergels torg extra cheese

stockholm by waves

Stockholm has more than its fair share of fast food establishments. Whether your meal is actually happy might be subject to debate. It's probably cheap, pretty fast and reasonably healthy if you stay away from the fries and the soft drink. But it's not exactly quiet and peaceful. Just listen to this.

They’re young, they’re determined and – fortunately – they all wear helmets. Watch out for that puck! (2008-02-21)
Det ska göra ont att spela hockey, sägs det. Helst hos motståndarlaget.

ice age remembered

stockholm by waves

I thought it would be a sneak preview of things to come. Some artificial winter before the real one sets in, I told myself in December while visiting the ice oval in the King's Garden (Kungsträdgården). I was dead wrong. The real winter had a change of plans and traveled elsewhere this year so we'd better cherish what memories we have of snowflakes, slippery roads and - of course - ice skating in the city. Here's another clip, enjoy! (2007-12-16)
E' de' det här du kallar vinter?

blandaren

stockholm by waves

The student's union at the Royal Institute of Technology are very much associated with creating and distributing a periodical, Blandaren ("the mixer"). Any frequent traveller of the Stockholm subway will have met guys in orange overalls selling it. Their sound is very much a logotype of the student's union so let's listen now to a gentleman generating demand among passers-by at the T-Centralen ("subway central") station. Enjoy. (2007-12-16)

ice age

stockholm by waves

Now is the time for ice skating. The King's Garden (Kungsträdgården) offers an amusing chaos where all ages and nationalities take a chance on that slippery surface. Snow or no snow, this is the sound of our Ice Age. (2007-12-16)
